Kitchen Cabinet Painting & Refinishing in North Central Florida

A factory-smooth finish on the cabinets you already have, using a multi-step process designed for the daily abuse kitchen doors and drawers take.

Refinish, reface or replace?

If your cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, cabinet painting in North Central Florida is usually the most economical way to change the look of a kitchen. Refacing swaps doors and veneers; replacement tears everything out. Painting keeps your existing boxes, doors and countertops and changes the color and finish.

Painting is not a fix for everything. Swollen particleboard near the sink, delaminating thermofoil, or doors that are warped won't be improved by paint. We check each cabinet during the walkthrough and tell you plainly which pieces are good candidates and which aren't.

Before deciding, think about how long you plan to stay in the house and whether the kitchen layout still works for you. Paint changes the look; it doesn’t move a dishwasher or add a pantry. If the boxes are sound and the plan is staying, refinishing is usually the most sensible spend.

How cabinet refinishing works, step by step

Doors and drawer fronts are usually finished off-site or in a dedicated area so they can lie flat and cure without dust. Boxes and face frames are masked and finished in place, with the rest of the kitchen sealed off from overspray.

  • Label every door and drawer front, remove hinges and hardware, and bag parts by location.
  • Degrease all surfaces; kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking oil that blocks adhesion.
  • Scuff-sand or degloss existing finishes, then vacuum and tack off the dust.
  • Fill dents and open grain where requested; caulk gaps between face frames and walls.
  • Apply a bonding primer formulated to stick to slick factory finishes, then sand smooth.
  • Spray or fine-finish two coats of waterborne urethane enamel, sanding lightly between coats.
  • Rehang doors, adjust hinges, and reinstall original or new hardware.

Why the coating matters more than the color

Wall paint isn't built for cabinets. It stays soft, sticks to itself, and scuffs where hands touch. We use waterborne urethane enamel, which levels to a smooth finish, cures harder over the following weeks, and resists the fingerprints and wipe-downs a kitchen gets. It also holds color better than older oil-based enamels, which tend to yellow, especially on whites.

Sheen is your choice. Satin is the most popular for a modern look and hides fingerprints reasonably well; semi-gloss is easier to wipe but shows every imperfection in the wood underneath.

Oak grain, humidity and other local realities

Many kitchens built in the 1980s and '90s around Gainesville and Ocala have red oak cabinets with deep, open grain. Paint will show that texture unless the grain is filled first. Some homeowners like the subtle texture; others want a perfectly smooth look. Grain filling adds labor, so we price it as an option and show you a sample.

Humidity matters too. Florida summers slow cure times, so we keep the house air-conditioned during the job and don't rush coats. Doors that go back up too soon can stick to the cabinet frame or pick up hinge marks. Cabinets above dishwashers and around sinks see the most moisture, and we pay extra attention to sealing edges in those spots.

Timeline and life in the kitchen

A typical kitchen takes about a week from start to rehanging doors, depending on the number of doors, grain filling, color changes and drying conditions. You'll usually have partial kitchen access during the work, though countertops near the boxes will be covered for part of that time. The finish is dry to the touch quickly, but full cure takes weeks, so use gentle cleaners and avoid slamming doors early on.

If you're closer to a specific town, see our Ocala cabinet refinishing page or our Dunnellon kitchen cabinet painting page. Bathroom vanities, laundry cabinets and built-in bookshelves follow the same process and can be added to the same project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Laminate that's well bonded can often be painted with the right bonding primer. Thermofoil that's peeling or bubbling usually can't be fixed with paint, because the plastic film keeps separating underneath.

Will I see brush marks on my cabinet doors?

Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed or fine-finished for a smooth result. If you prefer a hand-brushed look for a farmhouse style, we can do that intentionally.

Can I change hardware at the same time?

Yes, and it's a good moment to do it. If new pulls use a different hole spacing, we fill and sand the old holes before priming so they disappear under the finish.

How do I care for newly painted cabinets?

Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Skip abrasive pads and harsh degreasers, and give the finish a few weeks to fully harden before heavy scrubbing.

What colors work best on painted cabinets?

Whites, soft grays, greige and deep greens or blues are all common. Very dark colors show dust and wear on edges sooner, and pure bright whites can look stark next to warm countertops, so we suggest sampling a door before committing.
