Popcorn Ceiling Removal & Ceiling Painting in Gainesville and Ocala

Repainting tired ceilings and scraping dated acoustic texture, with the containment, testing and refinishing work that makes the ceiling look new rather than just different.

Two related jobs on the fifth wall

Ceilings get ignored until something forces the issue: a brown water ring from an old roof leak, smoke yellowing, or a bumpy acoustic texture that makes the whole house feel dated. This page covers both plain ceiling repainting and popcorn ceiling removal in Gainesville and Ocala homes, because the second always ends with the first.

A straightforward ceiling repaint involves covering everything below, cutting in along crown or wall lines, spot-priming stains, and rolling a flat ceiling paint in consistent passes so the sheen looks even when light rakes across it from windows.

Test before you scrape

Spray-on acoustic textures in older homes were sometimes made with asbestos. If your house was built or remodeled before the 1980s, or you simply don't know when the texture went up, have the ceiling tested for asbestos before anyone disturbs it. Testing involves a small sample sent to an accredited laboratory. It's a standard precaution, and it protects your family and anyone working in the house.

If the result is positive, removal falls under regulated abatement work and should be handled by a licensed abatement contractor; once it's cleared, we can take over the refinishing and painting. A negative result means we can proceed with ordinary removal. We'll ask about testing during the walkthrough and won't scrape untested texture in an older home.

How popcorn removal is done

Previously painted popcorn is harder; paint seals the texture so water can't soak in, and it often has to be scraped dry or scored first, which is slower and messier.

  • Empty or cover the room completely; seal doorways, vents and fixtures with plastic sheeting.
  • Turn off and protect ceiling fans and light fixtures, or remove them where practical.
  • Lightly mist the texture with water so it softens and drops without dust clouds.
  • Scrape in sections with wide blades, catching debris on floor plastic.
  • Repair gouges, tape seams that show, and address fastener pops in the drywall.
  • Skim coat or apply a light new texture, sand, then prime and paint.

What's hiding underneath

Popcorn texture was often used to hide rough drywall work. Once it's gone, you may see uneven seams, visible tape, or fasteners that were never fully covered. That's why skim coating or a light knockdown texture is part of most removal jobs. A smooth finish shows every imperfection under side lighting, so it takes more coats and sanding; a light texture is more forgiving and quicker. We'll show you both options and explain the tradeoff. Our drywall repair and patching page goes deeper on what that repair looks like.

Stains, sagging and humidity

Water stains bleed through regular paint, so they need a stain-blocking primer first. Before painting over one, make sure the leak above has been fixed; otherwise the ring will be back. Sagging drywall usually means the ceiling got wet and lost strength, and that section should be replaced rather than painted.

Florida humidity also affects ceilings. Bathrooms without good ventilation grow mildew overhead, and poorly insulated ceilings below hot attics can show ghosting lines along framing. We clean mildew before painting and recommend a ceiling paint suited to damp rooms where needed.

Timeline and planning

Repainting a ceiling typically takes far less time than removing texture from one. A single room's popcorn removal, repair and repaint commonly takes several days because joint compound needs drying time between coats, and humid weather slows that further. Whole-house removal is easiest before moving in or during a renovation. We often pair ceilings with interior wall painting so the room is finished in one visit, and you can see how we handle that in Newberry interior projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why test for asbestos if the house isn't that old?

Building dates don't always tell the whole story; materials may have been stored or installed later, and remodels can mix eras. A lab test is the only reliable way to know, and it's inexpensive compared with the risk.

Can you paint over popcorn instead of removing it?

Yes, with a thick-nap roller or a sprayer. It refreshes color but keeps the texture, and future removal becomes harder because the paint seals it.

Should I choose a smooth or textured ceiling after removal?

Smooth looks clean and modern but needs more finishing work. A light texture is more forgiving of drywall flaws and usually quicker to complete.

What sheen do you use on ceilings?

Flat is standard because it hides surface imperfections and reduces glare. Bathrooms may get a mildew-resistant ceiling paint that still looks flat.

Will the rest of the house get dusty during removal?

Wet scraping produces far less dust than dry scraping, and we seal doorways and HVAC vents with plastic. Sanding new joint compound does create fine dust, which is contained in the work room and cleaned up before we leave.
