Cabinet Refinishing in Williston, FL: The Truth About Thermofoil and Laminate
Not every cabinet should be painted. If your doors have a vinyl wrap or plastic laminate face, here's what we can do, what we can't, and how to tell which you have.
How to Identify Thermofoil and Laminate
Many homes in Williston Highlands, Pine Run and around Downtown Williston were finished with budget-friendly cabinet doors that aren't wood at all. Before you book cabinet refinishing in Williston, FL, it helps to know what you're looking at:
- Thermofoil: a thin vinyl skin heat-formed over MDF. Doors look seamless, with rounded edges and no visible joints. Look near the stove or dishwasher for bubbling or peeling skin.
- High-pressure laminate: a hard plastic sheet glued to particleboard, often with a darker or contrasting edge strip.
- Melamine: a paper-and-resin face common on cabinet boxes and shelves, smooth and slick to the touch.
- Real wood or wood veneer: shows grain, and an inside edge reveals wood fibers when lightly sanded.

Why Thermofoil Is Usually a Poor Candidate
Thermofoil cabinets fail in a specific way: heat from ovens, toasters and dishwashers softens the glue, and the vinyl lifts away from the MDF core. Paint on top of a skin that is already releasing simply peels along with it. Even intact thermofoil is a gamble because the vinyl expands and moves with heat differently than paint.
If your thermofoil doors are already peeling, we will tell you plainly that painting them isn't a good use of your money. The better path is new doors and drawer fronts, which we can then finish to match the boxes.
When Laminate Can Be Painted
Hard laminate and melamine are tougher subjects but not impossible. Sound, well-bonded surfaces can take paint if they are thoroughly degreased, scuff sanded to give the coating something to grip and coated with a bonding primer made for slick surfaces, then finished with urethane enamel. We test adhesion on a hidden spot before committing to the whole kitchen.
Edges are the weak point. Edge banding that has lifted needs regluing first, and chipped particleboard corners need filling. Laminate near a sink or dishwasher that has swollen from moisture can't be saved with paint.
A Mixed Approach Often Works Best
Plenty of kitchens we see combine materials: thermofoil doors on particleboard or plywood boxes with real wood face frames. In that case new paint-grade doors plus refinished frames and end panels can give a uniform, durable kitchen without full replacement. Our itemized quote separates each piece so you can see the tradeoff. Read more on our cabinet refinishing service page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you paint thermofoil if it isn't peeling yet?
It is possible, but we don't recommend it near heat sources because the skin may still let go later and take the paint with it. We'll explain the risk before you decide.
How do you test whether paint will stick to laminate?
We clean and prep a small hidden area, prime and coat it, then check adhesion after it cures. If it fails the test, we won't proceed with paint.
Can the cabinet boxes be painted if the doors get replaced?
Usually, yes. Wood face frames and many box surfaces take primer and enamel well, and new doors are finished to match.
Are new doors expensive compared with painting?
New doors add material cost and lead time, so they raise the total. We list them as a separate line next to the refinishing work so you can compare options; we don't quote prices without seeing your kitchen.
